The Lick Sleeve is an amazing product that prevents your dog from excessively licking its wound after an injury or surgery. It has gotten rave reviews from hundreds of customers due to its sleek design and functionality. It is a form fitting fit to size sleeve that eliminates the need for the dreaded “cone of shame” that you’ve probably seen on other dogs.
During this product review, we take a look at the design, durability, and functionality of the Lick Sleeve dog back leg protector.
Lick Sleeve Shipping and Packaging:
The Lick Sleeve was shipped to us in a very timely fashion. It was double boxed to protect the beautiful black folding chip board box containing the product.
The cool white/lime green logo featuring the hind quarters of a dog really stood out against the dark background. It is very appealing and immediately makes you want to open the box to see what’s inside.
Upon opening the box, I was pleased to find a cute free pair of Lick Sleeve socks covered with their signature dog logo. Beneath that was the Lick Sleeve itself in a nice smaller box with an opening to sample the soft fabric.
Printed in big bright green bold letters on the inside of the box was #ditchthecone, their signature motto. Overall, it was a very nice presentation from start to finish. Now, onto the product itself and the design.
Lick Sleeve Design:
The Lick Sleeve design is simple but effective. Like many products, it was created and developed out of necessity.
It was designed by Dr. David Allman who is a Board-Certified Canine Surgeon living in Austin, Texas. He specializes in orthopedic surgeries on dogs and owns a mobile surgery service to assist the area with complicated orthopedic repairs.
For many years, he received phone calls from dog owners who weren’t having the desired success with the “cone of shame” which can have a negative impact on a dog’s well-being.
To solve the problem for his clients, he hand-designed a fabric sleeve by cutting up one of his long sleeve shirts at home with some scissors and a unique pattern.
It was the beginning of what would later become the Lick Sleeve dog back leg protector.
The first two things that I noticed when I took it out of the box was how lightweight and soft it was.
The fabric is 95% polyester and 5% spandex which makes it very comfy and cozy for your dog. It is breathable so it doesn’t trap any moisture which can worsen the infection. It is also flexible so that it fits snugly on your dog’s back leg.
Additionally, it is machine washable which is great considering how much dogs love to play and get dirty. It does need to be hung out to dry to avoid any shrinkage. If it gets any wrinkles, you can cool iron it without any issues.
It is designed to stay on your dog. It slides over your dog’s leg and then wraps around the body to ensure it doesn’t slip off during a walk or play time. The two ends attach with an adjustable nylon strap and buckle.
Unlike the dreaded “cone of shame,” the design allows your dog to function normally with very few drawbacks. The only major hindrance is that you have to partially remove the Lick Sleeve from a male dog to allow them to pee.
Not to worry! Lick Sleeve has you covered and has a full video that demonstrates exactly how to tackle this issue when it’s time for your dog to relieve himself.
Reasons To Get The Lick Sleeve For Your Dog:
There are several reasons that we think you should #ditchthecone and get a Lick Sleeve for your dog!
1. Customer Reviews:
First and foremost, the customer reviews of Lick Sleeve are excellent! There is no doubt that dog parents have been extremely happy with the outcome of the dog back leg protector. The product has 490 five-star reviews at the time of writing this article. Most of them were happy owners of dogs who wore the Lick Sleeve following TPLO surgery and didn’t have any issues of licking their stitches.
2. Cones Cause Problems:
Known as an “Elizabethan collar,” the standard cone you have probably seen dogs wear around their neck to prevent them from licking their wounds has some negative side effects. This study, published on February 20, 2020, found that more than 3/4 of the 434 total cats and dogs who participated had a worse quality of life with the cone. This is mainly because it hinders their ability to do simple things like eat, drink, or play.
3. Faster Healing:
The Lick Sleeve will help your dog heal faster because it covers 100% of the wounded area. It also stays on three times longer than other similar devices. In addition to protecting your dog from licking or biting its wound, it also protects your dog from getting any new abrasions, scratching the affected area, or getting any mud and dirt in the wound. This allows for faster healing getting your dog back to its old self in a hurry!
4. Endorsed by Vets:
Not only is Lick Sleeve endorsed and trusted by veterinary surgeons all over the world, it was actually created by a vet. Dr. David Allman’s experience with healing and performing surgeries on his client’s dogs holds credibility with his fellow veterinarians. In fact, the product has a compliancy rate that is three times higher than the top competitor.
5. Your Dog Will Be Happier:
Overall, your dog will be much happier wearing the comfortable Lick Sleeve back leg protector than that cumbersome and annoying cone around the neck. This will reduce his anxiety and stress. He will also be able to move around much easier and play close to how he normally would.
Lick Sleeve Price and Sizing:
The Lick Sleeve is understandably higher priced than the Elizabethan collar. This is due to the design, top quality materials and functionality of the product. It comes in 4 sizes so no matter what dog breed you have, the Lick Sleeve will fit comfortably on their back leg.
Good news! Each size is the same price so if your dog is extra-large, you won’t need to fork over any extra cash!
Lick Sleeve Review In Closing:
We hope this Lick Sleeve review gave you some new and crucial insight into this amazing product. Overall, we would rate this product a 10/10 as an outstanding alternative to the “cone of shame.” Your dog deserves the best and this product doesn’t disappoint! The customer reviews don’t lie!
